Building collapses are avoidable if …—Ajimobi

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has reiterated the need for the employment of qualified building professionals to stem incidents of collapsed buildings across the country. Ajimobi, who bemoaned the usual loss of lives associated with such collapses, as “disgusting” and “unpalatable”, noted that such occurrences were avoidable if Nigerians employed only qualified personnel from start to finish of their building projects. Represented by  the deputy governor, Mr Moses Alake Adeyemo, at the opening ceremony of annual general meeting  of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Oyo chapter, Ajimobi asserted the commitment of the state government to ensuring safety in the building environment.

“The news of collapsed buildings has always been reported in our dailies and electronic media. This unpalatable news is disgusting, as the collapses have always involved loss of lives and properties. It is the belief that this problem is avoidable if qualified professionals are involved.”

He exemplified the commitment of the present administration to Housing and Environment matters through the commencement of implementation of the Ibadan City Beautification Scheme.

According to him, the rehabilitation and redevelopment of recreational and Tourism facilities all over the state attested to the commitment of the present administration to the creation of a beautiful and well ordered environment all over the state.

While assuring of the state government’s resolve to strengthening relevant agencies to handle all environmental and housing related matters in the state, he acknowledged the contribution of Architects to the provision of qualitative accommodation for the people of the state.

“The state government is making efforts at creating comfortable living conditions for our people in different parts of the state through the development of infrastructural facilities, creation of new Government Reservation Areas (GRAs) and partnership with Private sector on provision of housing schemes in the state”

Oyo Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Architects, Mr Afolabi Adedeji, charged Architects to enhance life and living in the increasingly congested urban spaces by being professional in their designs.

Chairman, organising committee of the annual general meeting, Mr Niyi Akinyemi, expressed concern over cases of building collapse in the country, stressing that qualified architects should always be involved in structural design and construction.

Highlights of the event was the exposition and inspection  of building materials and designs by the state deputy governor.
